Every external door must be fitted with an appropriate lock or deadlatch to ensure security.

Rental providers must supply rubbish and recycling bins that are verminproof and compliant with local council requirements.

All toilets must be in good working order and connected to a wastewater or treatment system approved by the local council. 

 

  1. Bathroom

Bathrooms must have a reasonable supply of hot and cold water and include a washbasin, a shower or bath, and a shower head with a minimum 3star water efficiency rating. 

 

 

 

  1. Kitchen

The kitchen must be functional, with a working stovetop, a dedicated cooking area, and a reasonable supply of hot and cold water. 

 

  1. Laundry

If a laundry is provided, it must have a reasonable supply of hot and cold water. 

 

  1. Structural Soundness

The property must be weatherproof, structurally sound, and free from major defects.

All rooms must be free from visible mould and dampness. 

 

  1. Electrical Safety

All electrical installations and any appliances supplied by the rental provider must comply with the electrical safety standard and be serviced by a licensed or registered electrician. 

 

  1. Window Coverings

Bedrooms and living areas must have functional curtains or blinds that provide privacy and block external light. 

 

  1. Windows

Every window that can be opened must be fitted with an appropriate lock or latch for security. 

 

  1. Lighting

All rooms, hallways, and common areas must have adequate natural or artificial lighting to ensure safe use. 

 

  1. Ventilation

All rooms, including bathrooms and laundries, must meet the ventilation requirements of the Building Code of Australia to prevent moisture buildup and mould.

The main living area must contain a fixed heater in good working condition that meets current energy efficiency standards. 

 

  1. Blind Cord Safety

All internal window coverings with accessible cords must be inspected to ensure they meet blindcord safety requirements.
